St Patrick Physical Education
It's time to get moving this winter!
Winter Physical Challenge:
As we get into the colder months, it can be harder to find ways to keep your child(ren) active. That’s where the Winter Physical Challenge comes in! How it works: They can choose to change to a different exercise each time a new commercial comes on, or do the same one for the duration. The idea is to get them moving each and every time a new series of commercials comes on. Also, I am asking you as parents to be challenged as well! While your children take part in this, it would be great if you could do it with them, during their TV show or even your own! Incentive: Each student can earn two sticks per week. If he/she watches one half-hour show with commercials per week, and participates for EVERY commercial during that show, he/she has earned two sticks. I just ask that you sign the tab, cut, and send it to school on the day he/she has PE. This is the only way the student will receive sticks. The sticks will be kept at school. If your child does not watch TV, great! To earn the sticks, he/she can just do any of the above exercises for a total of 10 minutes (at home) per week. ~ Limit: Two sticks per week, no matter how much the student participates, although the idea is to encourage it every show! Thank you!
Starting TODAY, if your children watch TV at all during the week (as most of us do), remind them to stand up and get physical every time a commercial comes on. I have discussed this with the students, so they will have an idea of what exercises to do, but here are a few to get started…
Jumping Jacks
Twists
Ski
Scissors
High Knees
Mountain Climbers
Jog in place
Knee Up/Over
Push-ups
Sit-ups
This is a great way for students to earn “sticks” for an end-of-the-year class prize! Throughout this year, whichever class has the highest percentage of sticks at the end of the year gets to enjoy an ice cream treat from the Dairy Queen! Yes, you CAN have ice cream in moderation! Sticks are earned during PE class and other occasions during regular school hours. The only other way to earn these sticks for their class is for them to participate in this Winter Physical Challenge.
~ I do not wish to condone TV time, just encourage physical activity at home. I hope you and your children are excited about it and give it a try!
